Speaking with your hands
Babies can use their hands long before they develop the complex musculature and sufficient control over their vocal cords needed for speech. Researcher and author Dr. Marilyn Daniels found that babies can construct language with their hands at least six to twelve months earlier.
Anyone who has had young children in their care knows that they are capable of understanding language long before they can express themselves verbally. Signing provides an ideal means of non-verbal communication, which can
- help lower frustration for you and your child; and
- provide an insight into your child's thoughts.
In addition, signing has been shown to encourage brain development and brain integration (left and right hemispheres of the brain working together), as well as offer many more invaluable benefits.
